Thermal Labels FAQ

Direct thermal labels are ideal for shorter-term label requirements, typically lasting less than 12 months. They are commonly used for applications such as shipping labels. Direct thermal labels are compatible with direct thermal label printers.

Thermal transfer labels are suitable for longer-term label requirements, lasting more than 12 months. They are commonly used for labelling products, shelves, and pallets. Thermal transfer labels require thermal printers and printer ribbons to print accurately.

To determine if a label is thermal transfer, apply some pressure and scratch the label with a fingernail. If a dark line appears underneath the scratch, it indicates that the label is a direct thermal label. On the other hand, if there is no dark line, then the label is a thermal transfer label.

Thermal transfer printers are capable of printing both direct thermal and thermal transfer labels. If you require labels with a longer life span, it is recommended to use thermal transfer labels along with printer ribbons. To print shorter life span labels, you can adjust the printer settings, remove the ribbon, and use direct thermal labels in the same printer.
